When you work on making new products, you often talk about meeting the needs and wants of the customer. Even though that sounds great on paper, it's not easy to figure out what your customers really want from your product.

What product, service or platform could you absolutely not live without?Your customers don't always know what they want, so it's up to your product team to figure out what those goals are.

If it works, your new product or feature will be much more likely to sell out quickly when it comes out.

What Do People Need?

In theory, you won't have a demand problem if you can make something that enough people want but can't get. But what does it mean to have a need?

At its core, a need is something that would fill a gap in a person's life that would cause problems if it wasn't filled. With this in mind, a person's need is likely to push them to act or motivate them to do something.

If you think the above sounds really vague, you're not the only one. Abraham Maslow, a psychologist, tried to make a more concrete list of the most common human needs so he could fully understand the idea.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is the name of his model, which was first put forward in 1943 and is still useful today. The model is based on the idea that people have basic needs that need to be met first (hence the hierarchy) before they try to meet their other needs.

For example, a person is more likely to make sure that their basic physiological needs (like food and shelter) are met before feeling like they need to buy an expensive house or car to keep up with the Joneses and improve their status in the community.

In theory, once the first level is done, the person moves on to the next level (and so on). Even though things aren't always that simple, this framework is a good way to understand what people need and why they do what they do.

Cell phones let people talk on the phone from anywhere. As more people got cell phones, this product started to solve problems about safety outside the house and getting help in an emergency.

Automobiles

Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla, would not be the business mogul he is today if cars hadn't been invented.

When the automobile was invented in 1886, it started a big change in technology by addressing problems like getting tired from walking or riding a bike and taking care of horses that pulled carriages.

Horse-drawn carriages are almost extinct today, except for tourist attractions and some services.
